Charles Robertson (Robinson)
Charles Robertson was a forty year old labourer from Dullater, Perth. He was taken at the capture of Carlisle. Was tried at York, October 1746, and sentenced to death, but reprieved. .—S.PJD., 79-26, 81-293, 88-42 ; S.P.D., 91-77 ; P.R., 8625-21 ; Baga, lxix. 189.
Charles who was a member of the Atholl Brigade, wrote to his father, anxious that the older man should pass on information to the parents of young Alex M'Donald. He hasn't been able to get a pass for the lad to go home, but he's hoping to keep him out of danger by making him his own servant, "free from guard or duty but my errands". And Betty's not to worry about Neil either, who's acting as servant to another officer. Charles himself sent his love to his mother and his friends and promised to go and visit his Aunt Joanne if the army visited Dumfries. And of course - "all the lads are in top spirits".
Charles was tried at York on 2nd October 1746 and was sentenced to death, but was reprieved on condition of transportation. He was later pardoned on condition of enlistment into Admiral Boscawen's force for service in the East Indies on 22nd July 1748.
